Automobile manufacturers rely heavily on physical prototypes and models and online tools to visualize designs. Physical prototypes provide a very natural viewing environment. However, these physical prototypes, usually made of foam and clay, can take from several weeks to several months to build and can cost from $20,000 to $60,000 for cube models and in excess of $250,000 for a full-size clay model. In addition, these physical models do not allow for a quick or cost effective way to iterate on designs or to be transported or shared among design centers across the world.

Online tools provide for real-time views and allow for the timely iterations of designs. However, they do not provide a natural viewing environment nor is the view 3D which can cause design errors.  Additionally, the designs are viewed on a large screen or monitor and only allow for one person to control the image that is displayed.

The Zebra Difference

In contrast, Zebra Imaging's holographic images can be used much like physical prototypes allowing the viewer to see the image at full size, in monochrome or in full color, full parallax, and viewable from any angle without the need for goggles, projectors, or anything other than a simple light source. Since the image is created from the CAD data set it provides an exact depiction of the digital data, it allows the designer to see the slightest flaw.  What you design, is what you get.  Zebra's holographic images can save automobile manufacturers both time and money.

Unlike physical models, Zebra's digital holography can provide automobile manufacturers with unprecedented levels of flexibility and efficiencies in visualizing designs through the use of channels and overlays.

layers when viewing at different angles.


Channels, a unique technology to Zebra, allow designers to incorporate and view multiple design alternatives into a single holographic image.  Think of channels as images within a holographic image.  Channels provide a very easy and cost effective way to visualize alternative designs of individual elements such as badges, components, wheels, secondary surfaces, and other details within the context of the larger design. For example, in one holographic image, designers can visualize multiple wheel-designs side-by-side and decide on the best alternative that matches the automobile.  Channels allow designers to "strip-away" the top surface of a vehicle to view the secondary or substructures below the surface allowing the designer a greater level of visualization to identify potential design flaws. In other applications, designers can see the exterior of the car in one view, and within the same holographic image, see the interior of the car in a different view; something that is impossible to do with a physical model.

Overlays are additional holographic images that can be placed on top of a holographic image to quickly alter its appearance.  Designers can easily incorporate these overlays to mix and match different components in an instrument panel and decide on the best combination.  When working with physical properties, designers have to tear-down and produce a completely new physical model to achieve this same effect.

Automobile manufacturers can reap value from Zebra Imaging's 3D holographic visualization tool in market research; making it faster and less expensive for focus groups to easily view more car concepts and alternate designs.  Manufacturers spend $20,000 to $40,000 to transport a single physical property from one city to the next and they usually conduct six to eight marketing clinics a year.  Holographic images are very inexpensive to transport; saving automobile manufacturers significant shipping costs.
