Robot collects 3D data of unexplored area beneath ancient temple

Archeologists are continually finding new ways to collect information about old historic sites. In Mexico, researchers used a small drone to explore a tunnel beneath the 2,000-year-old ruins of Teotihuacan, an ancient city located 30 miles northeast of modern-day Mexico City, reported Discovery. The robot was equipped with cameras and a laser scanner to collect images and 3D data that would allow researchers to see what was hidden beneath the Temple of the Feathered Serpent, also known as the Temple of Quetzalcoatl.

3D models can help build smarter cities

Government agencies, city planners and others are having to make increasingly complex decisions about city infrastructure, development and planning. These decision makers are leveraging new technologies that allow them to collect more data than ever before, from crime statistics to traffic patterns. But how does the city convert that information into actionable and usable data? Some urban planners are building 3D city models embedded with information about transportation, utilities, roads and other data. When information is packed into one 3D model, cities can more intelligently use resources, plan for future population changes and predict impending infrastructure needs.
